The Research Data Alliance (RDA) is a prominent international organization whose mission is to “build the social and technical bridges that enable open sharing of data.” The organization has grown to over 5400 members from 123 countries in just 4 short years. The U.S. region of RDARDA/US (all U.S. members of RDA) – is ready to go from “start up” to sustainable, and is seeking an Executive Director (ED) who can take RDA/US from its current successful state to the next generation of the organization: RDA/US 2.0.

The RDA/US ED will work with the RDA/US Chair and professional team, RDA/US community, and larger RDA membership and stakeholders to help lead this transformation. The ideal candidate will have experience with collaboration and partnership within the academic, public, non-profit private, and for-profit private sectors. We seek an ED who is part of the data community and would be a credible Principal Investigator on data-focused organizational and programmatic RDA/US grants within the public and non-profit private sector, as well as a partner and collaborator with for-profit data-focused organizations. The ED must both support and build the RDA/US community, coordinate and collaborate synergistically and effectively with the international RDA organization, envision and manage impact-focused community efforts, and sustain and grow RDA/US as part of the larger RDA organization.

We seek a candidate who is strategic, collaborative, impact-oriented, inclusive, collegial, and supports the RDA principles of openness, balance, consensus, harmonization, community, and technology neutrality. A successful ED will operate as a leader and builder within the data community, as an outward face of RDA/US, as a fund-raiser, and ultimately as a successful manager of RDA/US organizational staff. Candidates must be available for national and international travel, and demonstrate the ability to communicate data-focused research and technology efforts in a compelling way to non-specialist and stakeholder audiences. Residence in Troy, NY is preferred but candidates will be considered whose remote residence does not detract from full participation with the RDA/US team at Rensselaer.

Eligible candidates must possess a terminal degree in a discipline will allow the candidate to serve as PI for federal data-focused and organizational grants and contracts, and be able to demonstrate credibility as a PI of data-focused grants and contracts. Candidates must have research and operational experience in an academic, corporate, non-profit, or other major institutional setting including leadership experience of finances and personnel, and large-scale project management. Experience is expected to include oversight of stakeholder and community ecosystems of multi-million dollar efforts or organizations, as well as experience as a PI of federal and non-profit grants and contracts. Experience with audits and legal compliance in a university or non-profit setting is necessary.
