Job Summary

The Chemical Hygiene Officer implements Rensselaer’s Chemical Hygiene Plan; standard operating procedure review; chemical quantity tracking; incident reporting; accident investigations; lab inspections; &educational outreach.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in discipline related to the duties of the position.
  • Five years of experience in a laboratory or environmental health and safety, preferably in an academic environment.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications

Preferred certifications and training:

  • 40 hour HAZWOPWER certification
  • DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping certification
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of OSHA Lab Standard.
  • Demonstrated ability to write procedures and plans that specify handling of hazardous materials and safe work practices.
  • Demonstrated to identify hazardous materials, package materials for transport and accurately complete shipping manifests.
  • Knowledge of proper procedures for responding to emergencies involving hazardous chemical exposures.
  • Ability to provide training on EH&S practices and programs.
  • Ability to apply computer knowledge.
  • Ability to influence and coordinate laboratory activity across Portfolios, resolve problems in a timely manner, and develop alternate solutions when necessary.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with those who need to know of decisions/actions/problems.
  • Ability to modify communication style both formal and informal to match the appropriate level of the audience targeted.
    *Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Planning, organizing and effective time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Other Position Requirements

Works in office environments, and laboratories. Work is fast paced and demanding. May require long and irregular hours including evenings, nights and weekends. Work involves potential exposure to low levels/concentrations of chemical materials and use of a respirator may be needed for certain operations. Must be capable of meeting the medial qualifications specified in 29CFR1910.134.

Additional Information

The Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), reporting to the Director of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management for strategic and programmatic direction and to the Director of Center for Biotechnology & Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) for day to day operational matters, is responsible for implementation of Rensselaer’s Chemical Hygiene Plan; standard operating procedure review; chemical quantity tracking, procurement, receiving, distribution, storage and waste removal; reporting incidents; conducting accident investigations; lab inspections; and educational outreach.
